Milwaukee presents midwestern and world films in late September
By Festival Spotlight
The MILWAUKEE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL (MIFF) presents a superb program of World Cinema and Midwest-made films for Wisconsin’s welcoming audiences, September 18 to 28, 2008.
A short list of past MIFF films includes celebrated gems such as AMERICAN BLACKOUT; 13 TZAMETI; Hong Kong musical PERHAPS LOVE; Academy Award winner THE QUEEN, starring Helen Mirren; and WRISTCUTTERS: A LOVE STORY. The Festival has also featured the work of Judi Dench, Forest Whitaker, Penelope Cruz, and the late Heath Ledger.
MIFF 2007 had a tremendous turnout, with 30,000+ moviegoers in attendance, and over 30 sold-out screenings. The Festival’s atmosphere is lively, with many parties, workshops, and networking opportunities. MIFF provides travel and accommodations for nearly every filmmaker who can attend. Filmmaker Malona Voigt (CHICXULUB) deems MIFF “a gem among the many commercially driven festivals.”
The mission of the non-profit Milwaukee International Film Festival is to champion international and independent filmmakers, present high-quality, thought-provoking films, and bring Milwaukee’s communities together using film as a catalyst for cultural dialog.
MIFF’s World Cinema Showcase spotlights fine films and videos from North America and around the globe. Winners are honored with audience awards plus cash prizes.
Central to MIFF’s mission is the goal to promote and develop Milwaukee as the independent filmmaking center of the Midwest, and to bring awareness to high quality work from the region. As such, the Midwest Filmmaker Competition offers great exposure and $6,000 USD in cash awards, along with in-kind filmmaking goods and services equivalent to more than $15,000 USD.
