By Spokane Arts
The Palouse-influenced art of Katherine Nelson and William Turner will be featured from May 2-June 27, 2008 at Spokane City Hall’s Chase Gallery. The Chase Gallery is located in the basement of City Hall, 808 W. Spokane Falls Blvd. in downtown Spokane, Wash. The artist reception is scheduled for Friday, May 2, from 5 to 8 p.m. in conjunction with First Friday, the monthly festival showcasing arts in the Spokane area. Gallery hours are Monday from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Katherine Nelson works with charcoal to recreate the organic forms and curves of the Palouse. William Turner uses oil on canvas in his “Valley” series, influenced by fragment farmland, seen as an undergrad attending Washington State University. “A sense of harmony, radiance and optimism are trademarks of my work and these qualities in turn project to the viewer in a very positive way,” Turner says.
Katherine Nelson is a Colbert, Washington resident born in The Hague, The Netherlands and lived abroad for twelve years in Holland, Germany, Turkey and Belgium. She holds an MA in Drawing from State University of New York, Albany, NY and a BS in Art Education from Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY. Katherine Nelson has had exhibitions at the Art Spirit Gallery, Coeur d’Alene, ID, North Idaho College, Jennings Galleries, Davidson, NC, Art Vivant Gallery, Charlotte, NC, and Bethlehem Education Center, Delmar, NY. Katherine Nelson’s work was also featured on a 2005 episode of ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” when the design team selected pieces of her work from The Art Spirit Gallery for the home makeover in Sandpoint, ID.
William Turner holds a BFA in Painting from the University of Puget Sound and a MFA in Painting from University of Washington. He has had solo exhibitions at many galleries throughout Washington, Oregon, New York, Nevada, and Arizona, and has had many awards and honors. Turner feels he could “make a significant contribution to the Art Project for the Spokane international airport,” based on his works with the landscape.
