Thousands believed dead in Haiti

By News Services

There was still no tally of how many had been killed in the earthquake, which had an estimated magnitude of 7.0, but as rescue workers struggled to reach survivors, thousands of people were believed to be dead, said Haitian president René Préval.

“Parliament has collapsed,” Préval told The Miami Herald. “The tax office has collapsed. Schools have collapsed. Hospitals have collapsed. There are a lot of schools that have a lot of dead people in them. All of the hospitals are packed with people. It is a catastrophe.”
