Spokane man sentenced to five years in prison for receiving child pornography

James A. McDevitt, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington, announced that Richard Lloyd Parham, age 58, of Spokane, Washington, was sentenced today for receiving child pornography over the Internet. In the spring of 2008, the Washington State Patrol High Tech Computer Crimes Unit identified a computer sharing child pornography over the Internet. Further investigation showed that computer to be operating from Richard Parham’s residence in Spokane, Washington. In July 2008, a search warrant was executed at Richard Parham’s residence. Three computers, two additional hard drives, and various electronic storage devices were seized. A thorough examination showed them to contain nearly 600 videos of children pornography. Man stole radioactive gold from Los Alamos

By Darrin Jones Earlier today, Alex Maestas, 46, a former employee of the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), was sentenced in federal court in Albuquerque, New Mexico to a one-year term of imprisonment to be followed by three years’ supervised release by Senior United States District Judge C. LeRoy Hansen for stealing a two ounce piece of gold, valued at approximately $2,000, from a LANL processing facility. The gold, which was taken by Maestas on March 24, 2009, was contaminated with a small amount of americium and plutonium, which rendered the gold radioactive. Former Ridgefield School District employee sentenced to two years in prison for embezzlement

By Emily Langlie Peggy Kane, 57, of Ridgefield, Washington, was sentenced today in U.S. District Court in Tacoma to two years in prison, three years of supervised release, and $806,645 in restitution for wire fraud. Kane is the former assistant business manager for the Ridgefield School District, a small school district near Vancouver in Clark County, Washington. Over the course of 10 years, Kane manipulated the payroll system to artificially inflate her salary, illegally collecting more than $800,000. U.S. District Judge Robert J. Bryan imposed the sentence. The Ridgefield School District operates two elementary schools, a middle school, and high school with an annual budget of $16 million in 2009-10. A suicide bomber blew himself up Tuesday among dozens of Iraqi army recruits who had gathered near a military headquarters in downtown Baghdad in a strike that officials said killed at least 51 people and wounded 119. After three decades of spectacular growth, China has passed Japan to become the world’s second-largest economy behind the United States, according to government figures released early Monday. The milestone, though anticipated for some time, is the most striking evidence yet that China’s ascendance is for real and that the rest of the world will have to reckon with a new economic superpower. Edward E. Whitacre Jr. says he will step down as G.M.’s chief executive

In a surprising development, GM’s chairman and chief executive, Edward Whitacre Jr. announced Thursday that he would step down as chief executive on Sept. 1 and be succeed by Daniel F. Akerson, a G.M. board member and a managing director of the Carlyle Group. Paterson aide charged with assault

David W. Johnson, one of Gov. David A. Paterson’s closest aides, surrendered to Bronx prosecutors Thursday morning to face misdemeanor assault charges, a person briefed on the matter said. G.M. reports net income of $1.3 billion as it prepares for public offering

General Motors said Thursday that it had net income of $1.3 billion in the second quarter, becoming the third Detroit automaker to report stronger results. The quarterly profit marks G.M.’s strongest financial performance since 2004, and sets the stage for the automaker to file for an initial public stock offering as soon as Friday. It was the company’s second consecutive quarterly profit. The automaker reported revenue of $33.2 billion in the second quarter compared with $31.5 billion in the first.
