Garrin Hertel. Photo by Michael BreckenridgeAt noon on Valentine's Day, Hot Club of Spokane bandleader Garrin Hertel will introduce the one hour documentary Faubourg Tremé: The Untold Story of Black New Orleans (USA, 2008, 68 mins.), a selection of the Spokane International Film Festival at the AMC Theatres, Riverpark Square, in downtown Spokane.

Before Katrina, before a lot of the everyday history most people know about, was Faubourg Tremé, a section of New Orleans called the Sixth Ward. The film is a powerful statement of reminiscence, told in low-key by New Orleans Picayune columnist Lolis Elie, who takes us on a fascinating historical tour of what is near and dear to him.The film portrays the first neighborhood in America where free African Americans became poets, composers, and civil rights leaders well ahead of the birth of jazz and the larger civil rights movement.

Faubourg Tremé celebrates the community of the Sixth Ward on the outskirts of the French Quarter in New Orleans, Louisiana, a neighborhood that is intensely important to the cultural identity of contemporary America, yet remains relatively unknown to most people.

This fantastic documentary experiences moments of disbelief, astonishment, heartbreak, and victory, as the birth and rebirth of Faubourg Tremé encourages the viewer to live with the same creativity and resolve as the residents of the Sixth Ward of New Orleans who continue their struggle, not just to be recognized, but also to enjoy the peace and comfort of a truly diverse and satisfying American dream.

This film presentation is also part of Spokane's Lincoln Festival, endorsed by the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission. For more information, visit the movie's page on the Spokane International Film Festival website or watch the movie trailer on YouTube.

Bursting at the Seams
Dramatic plumes, both large and small, spray water ice out from many locations along the famed 'tiger stripes' near the south pole of Saturn's moon Enceladus. The tiger stripes are fissures that spray icy particles, water vapor and organic compounds. This mosaic was created from two high-resolution images that were captured by the narrow-angle camera when NASA's Cassini spacecraft flew past Enceladus and through the jets on Nov. 21, 2009. Imaging the jets over time will allow Cassini scientists to study the consistency of their activity. Image Credit: NASA/JPL/Space Science Institute...

Help Make A Difference! Donate Today.

The Inland Echo is taking donations on behalf of Lakeview Cemetery in Sprague for a field trimmer ($600 cost) to knock down the heavy overgrowth. Lakeview does not receive public funds, so volunteer donations are the only way to support the work to renovate this forgotten, historic final resting place of dozens of people, including many veterans. Please help us accomplish this important work. Thank you!
