At noon on Valentine's Day, Hot Club of Spokane bandleader Garrin Hertel will introduce the one hour documentary Faubourg Tremé: The Untold Story of Black New Orleans (USA, 2008, 68 mins.), a selection of the Spokane International Film Festival at the AMC Theatres, Riverpark Square, in downtown Spokane. 
The film portrays the first neighborhood in America where free African Americans became poets, composers, and civil rights leaders well ahead of the birth of jazz and the larger civil rights movement.
Faubourg Tremé celebrates the community of the Sixth Ward on the outskirts of the French Quarter in New Orleans, Louisiana, a neighborhood that is intensely important to the cultural identity of contemporary America, yet remains relatively unknown to most people.
This fantastic documentary experiences moments of disbelief, astonishment, heartbreak, and victory, as the birth and rebirth of Faubourg Tremé encourages the viewer to live with the same creativity and resolve as the residents of the Sixth Ward of New Orleans who continue their struggle, not just to be recognized, but also to enjoy the peace and comfort of a truly diverse and satisfying American dream.
