A driver and her two passengers were transported to a local hospital Saturday evening after a 5 p.m. one-car crash that ejected one and left all three with injuries.
Sheriff’s office investigators described the crash as “convoluted,” but said it appeared that two cars, each containing three occupants, were being driven recklessly on Bigelow Gulch between Forker and Argonne Roads. Witnesses reported the occupants of each “flipping each other off” at the light at Bigelow and Argonne minutes before the crash.
Despite this, it seems all were relatives or friends and they were chasing each other down the hilly roadway as they went eastbound from Argonne.
At one point, a 1996 Lexus driven by 18-year-old Robin M. Conrad (address unknown) was attempting to pass the friend’s car and an uninvolved truck in a double-yellow line “No Pass” zone. An oncoming vehicle appeared and she yanked the car back into the eastbound lane.
The Lexus skidded sideways off the roadway, hit a culvert and began rolling, ejecting a 17-year-old boy who suffered substantial head injuries. Conrad and her second passenger, another 17-year-old boy, both suffered injuries and all three were transported to a local hospital.
The friend’s car stopped and an occupant attempted to get into the trunk of the crashed Lexus where deputies believe there were drugs stashed. Justin Klaus, 20, was arrested and booked into the Spokane County Jail on a charge of Tampering With Evidence.
Another occupant in the second car, 20-year-old Dustin MacLean, was arrested on a previously issued misdemeanor warrant charging him with Domestic Violence Assault.
Investigators were still questioning the second driver at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. They intended to seize the Lexus for a search subsequent to obtaining a search warrant Monday.
Traffic detectives said they had reason to believe that driver Robin Conrad had consumed both alcohol and marijuana prior to the crash and they obtained a blood sample at the hospital. No formal charges had been lodged by 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Investigation into the crash is ongoing.
