A Spokane County sheriff’s lieutenant was arrested early Friday after he rolled his 2000 Lincoln Navigator just south of Liberty Lake and knocked down a wooden power pole.
Investigators report that Stephen P. Jones was exhibiting signs of alcohol impairment at the crash scene. He was later arrested for DUI by Washington State Patrol Trooper Mark Baker at a downtown medical facility where he was taken to have a head laceration treated.
The incident began about 1:30 a.m. when a caller reported to 911 that there was a one-vehicle rollover accident at about Third and Molter Road south of Liberty Lake. A power pole was down and across the roadway.
Liberty Lake Police Officer Darin Morgan was first to arrive and advised power was out in the area. Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Frost arrived and handled the crash investigation.
Because Jones is a sheriff’s employee, the DUI investigation was referred to the Washington State Patrol and Trooper Baker. The trooper completed a blood draw at the hospital, but results won’t be returned from the Washington State Crime Lab for about 30 days.
Jones took Friday off and did not report to work. He is currently assigned to special projects, an administrative position, so no immediate change in his work status is planned. He has held a variety of positions within the agency since being hired in September of 1984.
Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich is attending a convention in Atlanta, Georgia this week. He was called and advised of the incident.
