General Motors files for initial public offering
General Motors filed on Wednesday to go public. The long-awaited event marks the biggest step by the car maker to date in its effort to shed the government’s controlling ownership stake and resume life as a public company. Many details were missing from Wednesday’s filing, including the number of shares it plans to sell in the offering. But G.M. said it plans to sell both common stock and preferred shares, which are considered bond-like instruments. China’s economy passes Japan’s in quarter, becoming the world’s second largest
After three decades of spectacular growth, China has passed Japan to become the world’s second-largest economy behind the United States, according to government figures released early Monday. The milestone, though anticipated for some time, is the most striking evidence yet that China’s ascendance is for real and that the rest of the world will have to reckon with a new economic superpower. The milestone was reached early Monday, when Tokyo said that in the second quarter, the Japanese economy was valued at about $1.28 trillion, slightly below China’s figure of $1.33 trillion. The gross domestic product of the United States was roughly $14 trillion in 2009. Japan’s economy grew 0.4 percent in the second quarter, Tokyo said, substantially less than forecast. Edward E. Whitacre Jr. says he will step down as G.M.’s chief executive
In a surprising development, GM’s chairman and chief executive, Edward Whitacre Jr. announced Thursday that he would step down as chief executive on Sept. 1 and be succeed by Daniel F. Akerson, a G.M. board member and a managing director of the Carlyle Group. Whitacre will stay on as chairman until year end, when Akerson will assume that role as well. “We’re going to have a smooth, seamless transition here,” Whitacre said. The announcement came shortly after General Motors said that it earned $1.3 billion in the second quarter and cited sustained progress in rebuilding operations after emerging from its government-sponsored bankruptcy last year. General Motors said Thursday that it had net income of $1.3 billion in the second quarter, becoming the third Detroit automaker to report stronger results. The quarterly profit marks G.M.’s strongest financial performance since 2004, and sets the stage for the automaker to file for an initial public stock offering as soon as Friday. It was the company’s second consecutive quarterly profit. The automaker reported revenue of $33.2 billion in the second quarter compared with $31.5 billion in the first. Earnings in the first quarter were $865 million. Dow falls 2.5% amid concerns of a slowdown; Nasdaq drops nearly 3%
Shares on Wall Street retreated in the wake of the announcement by the Fed that it would buy government debt and as new trade figures suggested a slowdown in growth in the United States. The trade data came on the heels of economic reports from China that indicated that its economy was slowing. At the close, the Dow Jones industrial average was 2.5 percent, while the broader Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index dropped 2.81 percent. The technology heavy Nasdaq fell 3 percent. Markets fall 2% on concerns about slowing recovery
Shares on Wall Street quickly retreated Wednesday morning in the face of the Fed’s decision to buy government debt and more economic news that pointed to a slowdown, both in the United States and China. In the bond market, the price of the 10-year Treasury note continued to rise, as yields fell to lows not seen in more than a year. The 10-year yield was at 2.72 percent from 2.76 percent late Tuesday. And the dollar strengthened against the euro, but hit a 15-year low against the yen, driving the Nikkei index sharply lower. Fed to buy government debt; says the recovery has ‘slowed’
Acknowledging that “the pace of recovery in output and employment has slowed in recent months,” the Federal Reserve on Tuesday announced that it would use the proceeds from its huge mortgage-bond portfolio to buy long-term Treasury securities. The action was a small step in dollar terms but the clearest indication yet that officials at the central bank had become alarmed about new indications that the recovery had stalled and could even, in the view of some Fed officials, turn into deflation, a spiraling decline in demand, wages and prices. Signs of strength in economy and banking lift stocks; S&P 500 Up 2.2%
Wall Street began August with a broad surge on Monday afternoon, fueled by positive news about bank earnings in Europe and a survey that said American manufacturing was stronger than expected in July. The widely followed Standard & Poor’s index of 500 stocks climbed more than 24 points, or 2.2 percent, in preliminary figures. The Dow industrials gained 208.44 points, or 1.99 percent, to close at 10,674.38. While concerns over Europe have recently had an influence on investor sentiment, the banks’ earnings, results of the European banking stress tests and purchasing managers’ index for the 16 countries that use the euro appeared to ease some pessimism that a global credit crisis was imminent. In the United States, investors saw positive signs in the Institute for Supply Management’s survey, which fell less than … Read entire article »

U.S. economic growth slowed to 2.4% rate in 2nd quarter
The United States economy expanded at a 2.4 percent annualized rate in the second quarter of this year, slowing significantly from the revised 3.7 percent rate of the previous few months, the Commerce Department reported on Friday. Gross domestic product, a broad measure of the total value of goods and services produced in the economy, has been expanding for the last year, leading many economists to believe the recession that began in December 2007 is technically over. But G.D.P. growth in the last quarter of 2009 was much more robust than it has been this year, which, coupled with disappointing job creation, has led to worries that the recovery is losing steam. Many economists expect growth rates under 2 percent for the remainder of the year. Applied Economics: Thinking Beyond Stage OneThis revised … Read entire article »

Fed board member’s deflation warning hints at policy shift
James Bullard, the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, warned on Thursday that the Fed’s current policies were putting the American economy at risk of becoming “enmeshed in a Japanese-style deflationary outcome within the next several years.” The warning by Bullard, who is a voting member of the Fed committee that determines interest rates, comes days after Ben S. Bernanke, the Fed chairman, said the central bank was prepared to do more to stimulate the economy if needed, though it had no immediate plans to do so. A subtle but significant shift appears to be occurring within the Federal Reserve over the course of monetary policy, amid increasing signs that the economic recovery is weakening. Bullard had been viewed as a centrist, and associated with the camp that saw … Read entire article »

BP announces $17 billion loss, names Dudley chief executive
BP named Robert Dudley as chief executive Tuesday and reported a record $17 billion loss in the second quarter in the aftermath of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. BP set aside $32.2 billion for costs related to the spill, including $20 billion for an escrow fund announced earlier. To help cover the costs, the company plans to sell assets worth $30 billion over the next 18 months. Mr. Dudley, an American, is to become BP’s first non-British chief executive at the beginning of October, replacing Tony Hayward, who is stepping down following criticism about the way he handled the spill. Ford earns $2.6 billion profit, and projects improvement in 2011
The Ford Motor Company on Friday said it earned $2.6 billion in the second quarter and expects to have more cash than debt by the end of 2011. It was the fifth consecutive quarterly profit for Ford, whose turnaround has been gaining momentum as it has increased sales and market share in the United States. Ford, the only Detroit automaker not to file for bankruptcy protection or receive emergency federal aid, said it expects to be profitable in the second half of this year and deliver even stronger results in 2011. It said profits in the second half of 2010 would be less than the $4.7 billion it earned in the first half, however, due to seasonal changes in demand and new product introductions. Extension of jobless benefits clears key Senate hurdle on 60-40 vote
With the bare minimum of votes required to avoid a filibuster, the bill to extend unemployment benefits cleared the most important procedural hurdle in the Senate and advanced to a final vote and all but certain passage, expected later today. Democrats in the Senate moved ahead with the bill after an interim appointee, Carte Goodwin, was sworn in this afternoon to fill the West Virginia seat left vacant by the death of Robert C. Byrd and provide the 60th yes in a largely party-line vote. The bill is expected to be approved by the House of Representatives on Wednesday. Senator Robert F.
