18 killed in mass panic at Germany’s Love Parade
Crowds streaming into a techno-music festival in western Germany surged through a jammed entry tunnel Saturday, setting off a panic that killed at least 18 people and injured 80 at an event meant to celebrate love and peace. “The young people came to celebrate, and instead there are deaths and injured,” said Chancellor Angela Merkel. “I am horrified by the suffering and the pain.” Criticism quickly fell on city officials for allowing only one entrance to the grounds of a popular event that drew as many as 1.4 million people to dance and listen to DJs spin in Duisburg, near Düsseldorf, in the industrial west central part of the country. The founder of Love Parade, Matthias Roeingh, known by the name Dr. Motte, blasted the planning for the event, saying “one single entrance … Read entire article »

Oil well gushes unchecked after accident forces BP to remove cap
The Coast Guard said on Wednesday that BP had been forced to remove a cap that was containing some of the oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico. Adm. Thad W. Allen of the Coast Guard said that an underwater robot had bumped into the venting system. That sent gas rising through vent that carries warm water down to prevent ice-like crystals from forming in the cap. Mr. Allen said that the cap had been removed and crews were checking to see if crystals have formed before putting it back on. BP agrees to place about $20 billion in escrow for spill claims
The White House and top executives of the energy giant BP have tentatively agreed that the oil company will pay about $20 billion over several years into an independently controlled fund to pay compensation to people and businesses harmed by the immense oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The fund would be overseen by Kenneth Feinberg, the prominent lawyer who ran the compensation fund for victims of the Sept. 11 terror attacks and is the government’s special master for executive pay under the TARP program. President Obama demanded the creation of such a fund in his national address about the oil spill Tuesday evening, and met with company execcutives at the White House on Wednesday. ‘Top Kill’ effort seems to be working, U.S. says cautiously
By News Services The latest effort to plug a gushing underwater oil well in the Gulf of Mexico appeared to be working, officials and engineers said on Thursday morning, though definitive word on its success was still hours away. At the same time, government experts said that the flow of oil from the well, which has been gushing since an explosion and fire wrecked a drilling rig in late April, was several times worse than the preliminary estimate by BP, the oil company responsible for the rig and the well. And The Associated Press reported on Thursday that the head of the agency responsible for regulating offshore oil drilling had been dismissed. Hurricane season starts today
By FEMA News As Hurricane Season 2009 begins today, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) continues to work with our state, local, and federal partners to increase preparedness and coordinate response and recovery in the case of a hurricane or disaster. FEMA also urges Americans to use the annual start of hurricane season as a reminder to assess your personal readiness to respond to emergencies. “If you live a hurricane prone area, ensuring your family is prepared is common sense,” said Craig Fugate, FEMA Administrator. “We never know where the next hurricane or disaster will strike, but we know that the more we do now to prepare, the better the outcome will be. FEMA will continue to work with our state, local, and federal partners to ensure that we are prepared, but … Read entire article »
